Cairns Youth Foyer

We’re proposing to build a youth foyer in Cairns to provide a place to stay for young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

The proposed development will provide approximately 40 self-contained units for young people aged 16 to 25 years old, who will pay rent, shop and cook for themselves while receiving 24/7 onsite mentoring and support.

All young tenants must commit to employment, education or training while they are staying at the youth foyer.

Cairns Youth Foyer is one of 8 new youth foyers announced in our Homes for Queenslanders plan.

We chose Cairns as a youth foyer location as there is a high demand for independent and supportive housing for young people.

This will be the fourth youth foyer we’ve developed, with established youth foyers operating in Logan and the Gold Coast, and another being built in Townsville.

Two more youth foyers will be built in Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay with further work to be done with the community to identify the other five sites across the state.

Young people receive social and emotional support from an onsite youth service at the foyer. They are taught skills such as budgeting to manage living costs, and how to look after a rental property to prepare them for living independently.
